We’ll just feed two birds with one crumb, as the hippies in Santa Cruz say, since we’ve got AM baseball from the Bronx starting in about 45 minutes.

My dad’s default answer to “whatever happened to” baseball player questions has always been “he’s driving a beer truck somewhere.” This apparently was either actually true, or was said to be true, of the post-retirement career of former Phillie pitcher Art Mahaffey, who, among other feats of dubious note, featured in the epic collapse of the ‘64 Phillies.

Anyway, there was a beer truck crash on Highway 17 this morning. I hope Eric Byrnes is OK.

Crisp CF, Davis LF, Zuke DH, Kouz 3B, Ellis 2B, Carson RF, Larish 1B, Powell C, Pennington SS, and Braden on the hill, facing Sabathia. I’d like to be optimistic, since I seem to recollect that the A’s have won more than they’ve lost vs CC over the years. But at the moment, Oakland winning a game in the Bronx feels like an Augean Stables-level task, since the A’s are, in fact, playing like horse shit.

It’s the 18th anniversary of Jose Canseco being pulled from the on-deck circle in a game at the Coliseum, so trades do happen on August 31. I’m looking at Brad Ziegler’s place in the A’s bullpen, with 7 appearances for a total of 6 innings in the month of August, plus Slusser’s disclosure that the A’s are calling up Justin James and Ross Wolf for tomorrow’s game, and thinking that if a contender wants to add a submarining righthander to their bullpen for the stretch drive and postseason, there’s probably one available in Oakland. I’m not expecting any deal but that one would not surprise me.

Crisp, Barton, Suzuki, Cust, Kouzmanoff, Ellis, Larish (LF again), Davis, Pennington. Mazzaro vs. Phil Hughes. It was 92 degrees in Central Park last hour.
